Beyond publication: iOpenAccess & NIH policy
Taylor & Francis have extended their iOpenAccess option to cover over 320 journals in the physical sciences, environmental and agricultural sciences, behavioural sciences (including Psychology Press), development studies and medical, clinical and bioscience journals from Informa Healthcare.
All authors whose manuscripts are accepted for publication in one of our iOpenAccess journals have the option to make their articles freely available to all via the journal's website for a one-off fee of $3,250/£1,725/€1,900 (prices from 2010).
This initiative is a "hybrid" open access scheme in selected subjects, and comes after the experience of a number of years' experimentation with access schemes operated by various Taylor & Francis journals, as well as wide consultation with our editors, society partners, and research funders. We intend to increase the number of iOpenAccess journals, and fees may vary as we expand this initiative into other subject areas.
Your article can be freely posted to any institutional or subject repository of your choice.
Authors selecting the iOpenAccess option will have no embargo restriction on posting their version of the published article to any institutional or subject repository. Where appropriate, we will also facilitate the deposit on behalf
of authors into PubMedCentral.
Your article will be freely accessible to all.
Authors will be asked to grant a publishing license or assign copyright in the normal way. Selection of the iOpenAccess option and payment of the appropriate
fee will then allow the article to be made available to all under the
Supplemental Terms and Conditions for iOpenAccess articles published in Taylor & Francis journals. Under this license
we will allow tagging and cross-referencing of articles within repositories so that they relate back to
the original research grants and programs.
The peer review integrity of your article will not be compromised.
Our commitment to stringent, independent, expert peer review remains - only accepted articles are eligible for the scheme,
and authors will only be offered the open access option when they are sent their proofs for review.
This complete separation of payment from the peer review and acceptance process will ensure that
editorial independence and quality are not compromised.
Commenting on the continuing expansion of the initiative, Journals Publishing Director, Dr David Green, stated: "Taylor & Francis continues to have a strong tradition of meeting the needs of the academic and scientific research communities. Due to demand within certain author communities we are extending iOpenAccess availability. Author take-up thus far has been mainly in the biomedical and psychology fields, but authors whose research is supported by certain funders do require this option to be available."
We undertake to review the subscription prices of each journal with respect to the uptake of the iOpenAccess initiative, and the relevant information will be published at www.informaworld.com.
Ordering iOpenAccess.
iOpenAccess is administered by Rightslink, who also handle our author reprints orders. If your article has been accepted for publication in a journal that has
this option, you will receive an email with the subject line "iOpenAccess is available for your article."
This will give you a link to the Rightslink iOpenAccess order page, which is very similar to the reprints order page.
From this page, you can sign in to Rightslink or create a new account.
You will need to register with Rightslink to order iOpenAccess. There are no time constraints on when you may order iOpenAccess for an article.
You will have options for billing when you create the account (you can select credit card or purchase order [i.e. invoice]). The one you selected when you created the account is your default setting when using Rightslink. If you want to change the billing options after creating an account, you can do this at http://myaccount.copyright.com. If you have any problems with this you can contact a customer service representative at Rightslink directly at customercare@copyright.com
As part of the process for ordering iOpenAccess, you are required to sign an iOpenAccess agreement form and return it to the production office of the journal. iOpenAccess will only be activated once the payment and this signed form have been received.
NIH policy
We have issued the following statement in response to the National Institutes of Health policy on Open Access:
As part of our author services program, Taylor & Francis will deposit to PubMed Central (PMC) author manuscripts on behalf of Taylor & Francis, Routledge and Psychology Press authors reporting NIH funded research. This service is offered as part of Taylor & Francis' new 2008 deposit agreement with the NIH.
This service will help authors to comply with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) revised 'Public Access Policy', which came into force on April 7, 2008. The NIH's revised policy mandates NIH-funded authors to submit to PubMed Central (PMC), or have submitted on their behalf, at the point of acceptance, their peer-reviewed author manuscripts, to appear on PMC no later than 12 months after final publication.
Taylor & Francis will deliver to PMC the final peer-reviewed manuscript, which was accepted for publication and that reflects any author-agreed changes made in response to the peer review. Taylor & Francis will also authorize the author manuscript's public access posting 12 months after final publication in print or electronic form (whichever is the sooner). Following the deposit by Taylor & Francis, authors will receive further communications from the NIH with respect to the submission.
Under our Author Rights policy introduced in 2005, authors also have the right to post their version of the submitted author manuscript (pre-print), or their version of the final published article (post-print) on their personal or institutional web site. Post-print web postings are subject to an embargo of 12 months in STM subjects and the behavioral sciences. Please note that, in line with Taylor & Francis' author publication agreements, authors should not post manuscripts directly to PMC or other third party sites for any systematic external distribution by a third party (for example to a listserv or database connected to a public access server). Individual modifications to this general policy may apply to some Taylor & Francis, Routledge and Psychology Press journals and society publishing partners.
