    Checking your references with CrossRef
    You can paste your complete reference list into the search box on CrossRef's Simple Text Query page to obtain the DOIs and check that your references are valid. To check the accuracy of a reference, click on the DOI link that comes up. Your reference list should be alphabetical or sequential, but the style is not important.

    Checking references
    ReferenceChecker is a user-friendly program for fast and accurate checking of name + date-style references (Harvard and APA) and numerical references (Vancouver) in Word files, designed to banish the tedium of manual reference-checking.     Recording references as you work
    'Document it' is a referencing tool that works within Microsoft® Word as a macro. It can be used to record references as you write. It stores the relevant information within your document, meaning that you can keep the information in one place. It is based on the Harvard system of referencing and sets out the references in the correct format for each source. See www.documentit.co.uk.

    Tip for accurate journal references
    Typing errors often render references inaccurate. For accurate references to biomedical journals, check the reference in PubMed's Single Citation Matcher or Batch Citation Matcher and copy the PubMed citation into your document.

    • Bookends offers reference management and bibliography software for Mac OS X, allowing users to search for and import references from online sources, e.g. Library of Congress, PubMed, Web of Science, Amazon, JSTOR, and Google Scholar. The website is www.sonnysoftware.com.
    • EasyBib can format your citations according to the 6th Ed. of the MLA Handbook and the 5th edition of the APA Manual. Their website is www.easybib.com.
    • EndNote® is a software tool for publishing and managing bibliographies, available for Windows and Macintosh systems. EndNote output styles are now available for hundreds of Taylor & Francis Group journals. If you are submitting to a journal that has one of our new standard reference styles (A to X), and you have access to EndNote in your library, you will be able to download the correct output style. On the journal's Instructions for Authors page you will see a link to 'Description of the journal's reference style'. The name of the style will be given at the top of this document, for example our APA reference style is called TF-A. If you are not sure about the journal's reference style, please contact our Author Services Department (authorqueries@tandf.co.uk).
    • JabRef is an open source bibliography reference manager using BibTeX, the standard LaTeX bibliography format. JabRef runs on the Java VM, and should work equally well on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. The website is http://jabref.sourceforge.net.
    • refbase is a web-based, platform-independent, multi-user interface for managing scientific literature and citations. The website is http://refbase.sourceforge.net.

    • Scholar's Aid keeps bibliographical data and notes together, transfers the selected text into a word-processed document and inserts an appropriate citation into the document in a form determined by the user. The website is http://scholarsaid.com/index.html.
